Rock Hall of Famer plans to retire in 2028 ‘if I make it that far’

Rock Hall of Famer plans to retire in 2028 ‘if I make it that far’

LONDON — Robert Smith has been the frontman for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band The Cure since it formed in Crawley, United Kingdom, in 1978.

Forty-six years later, though, the 65-year-old Smith acknowledges his time touring and playing live shows is nearing its end.

The Cure has two upcoming sold-out shows in London. Smith said he plans to tour with The Cure until 2028 – the band’s 50th anniversary – before retiring from live performances.

“I’m 70 in 2029,” Smith said during an interview with London-based The Times. “And that’s it, that really is it. If I make it that far, that’s it.”

The Cure’s two upcoming sold-out shows in London are scheduled for Oct. 30 and Nov. 1. The gothic-rock band will also release its new album, “Songs of a Lost World,” on Nov. 1, marking The Cure’s first album release since 2008.

The Cure were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Smith was inducted alongside bandmates Michael Dempsey, Reeves Gabrels, Simon Gallup, Roger O’Donnell, Porl Thompson and Lol Tolhurst. The Cure has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, according to BestSellingAlbums.org.

“I’ve led a very privileged life,” Smith told The Times. “I can’t believe how lucky I’ve been. I’m still doing what I always wanted but the fact I’m still upright is probably the best thing about being me because there have been points where I didn’t think I would hit 30, 40, 50. My mind doesn’t function with the same acuity it once had, but I’m much more relaxed and easier to get on with.”
