Rockets hit the area near Baghdad Airport

BAGHDAD, OCT 1 – Two Katyusha rockets hit the area around Baghdad International Airport today, but did not cause any injuries, according to the Iraqi military, reported Xinhua.

The attack occurred at 12:20 a.m. local time Tuesday (9:20 p.m. GMT Monday) when two rockets hit an area near the airport, with one of them hitting an Iraqi Counterterrorism Service base, according to a statement from Iraqi Joint Operations Command spokesman Tahsin al-Khafaji.

Iraqi security forces found a rocket launcher on top of an abandoned truck in the al-Ameriyah neighborhood west of Baghdad and managed to disable several unfired rockets in the launcher, al-Khafaji said, adding that more information would be released later.

Meanwhile, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua that Iraqi forces surrounded the neighborhood and launched an investigation to identify the attackers.

He said the attack appeared to target an Iraqi military base housing US military experts near the airport.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
