The Berlin fire brigade was on a major operation in Mitte on Tuesday evening. On the Spree in the area of Fisherman’s Island A roof on an event boat partially collapsed.
Four people were seriously injured and five other guests were slightly injured, a fire department spokesman told the Tagesspiegel. Initially, he had spoken of almost 30 injured people. However, “a large number of people” had to be cared for on site by the fire department and rescue services. The situation is dynamic and the number of injured people could still rise.
About 120 people were celebrating on board the boat when the roof collapsed, the spokesman said.
The accident occurred at around 9:18 p.m. It is currently unclear what exactly caused the collapse. The fire department was also unable to say what type of boat it was. However, it was moored at the jetty on Fischerinsel and was not underway.
The injured were distributed to several hospitals. The fire brigade was on site with 70 emergency personnel. The police and a rescue helicopter were also deployed. The Spree and the banks were searched using a multi-purpose boat. However, there were no other people in the water.
