Coach Marco Rose hopes that the setback in the first Champions League game of the new season will have “a positive influence” on RB Leipzig’s upcoming tasks. “We want to regain our self-confidence through the Bundesliga, learn something from it and draw energy,” said the coach after the 1:2 defeat at Atlético Madrid.
The Saxons will face FC St. Pauli away on Sunday (7:30 p.m./DAZN). “We don’t have much time to spend on it,” said Rose, looking back. “It’s the worst situation you can have: we play here at 9 p.m., then fly back to Hamburg on Saturday. We have to make sure we regenerate well, recharge our batteries and trust the depth of our squad.”
In the Spanish capital, Rose missed some aspects of his team. “We could have used the spaces that were there better, played with more confidence. We didn’t manage that,” said the 48-year-old.
Christoph Baumgartner, who came on as a substitute in the second half in Madrid, expects a “completely different task” at the local club. Unlike at Atlético, Leipzig are once again the clear favorites against FC St. Pauli, who have yet to score a point. “Another great game awaits us. We have to accept it 100 percent. If you’re not 100 percent there, they’ll eat you up,” said Baumgartner.
