An entrance with granite columns and Georgian style fan-lit door gives Angle Villa near Goresbridge village in Kilkenny the kind of grandeur that you don’t find in modern homes.

It is believed locally that the detached mid 19th century property may have once had a connection to the Smithwick family which had established one of Ireland’s best known breweries a century earlier.

Selling agent Lisa O’Sullivan of DMG Ella Dunphy says not a lot is known of the history of the property which was extensively renovated by the current owners, who since buying it 40 years ago have turned into a comfortable family home.

“They restored the pillared entrance while also put in double glazed windows and modern heating as well as a modern kitchen and bathrooms,’’ reveals Ms O’Sullivan.

One window at the front of the property belongs to a spacious living room with a mahogany fireplace and the other to a long formal dining room. To the rear there’s a bathroom and, in separate extensions, a smaller sitting room and kitchen with country style units and a Stanley range.

An original carved staircase leads to the upper floor which has four bedrooms and a modern bathroom.

Set on grounds of close to two acres, Angle Villa has a long driveway and extensive lawned gardens some outbuildings and a long bed planted with deep pink roses.

Guiding at €550,000, the property is located 18 km from Kilkenny

VERDICT: Offers country living with old world grandeur.
