MENTOR, Ohio — An ankle injury kept D.J. Sears to just five carries, but each one either moved the chains or put points on the board.

Sears, a 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior, scored three touchdowns and picked up two first downs in Lake Catholic’s 34-20 win Thursday against Kenston at Mentor’s Jerome T. Osborne Stadium. One of Sears’ biggest carries came on fourth-and-1 late in the fourth quarter near midfield. His conversion led to his third score, which clinched the victory for the Cougars (5-0), who are ranked 18th in the cleveland.com high school football Top 25.

Sears finished with 10 yards on five carries, while Jimmy Gibbons rushed for 156 yards on 24 carries. Lake Catholic rushed for 197 yards as a team and gained 392 yards, as senior quarterback Frankie Trinetti completed 17 of 26 passes for 195 yards, including a TD pass to senior Ace Peterlin, who hauled in six receptions for 80 yards. Patrick Radigan added 56 yards on four receptions.

Freshman running back Ethan Burge sparked Kenston (2-3) with 85 yards on 24 rushes. Senior Lucas Kaltenbach finished 7 of 19 for 73 yards with Tymir Cardona his top target, gaining 52 yards on four receptions. Kaltenbach also rushed for 68 yards on seven carries.
