CLEVELAND, Ohio – See 2024 Ohio school report card details for every charter school building in Ohio. The Ohio Department of Education released the scores Friday, complete with new overall star ratings along with the previous five categories. An overall rating of at least three stars means a school meets state standards.
Charter schools are public schools but are privately run and rely on public tax \dollars.
Schools receive points for five components based on their level of performance. Each component is weighted and then summed to determine the overall rating. Where data is not available, “NR” is used instead. For instance, the graduation rate is only applicable to those who graduate high school. An elementary school will receive an “NR” in the category.
Ratings range from 1 star (needing significant support to meet state standards) to 5 stars (significantly exceeding state standards.) Three stars mean a school meets state standards.
The components of achievement and progress are weighted at 29%, while graduation rate, gap closing and early literacy are rated at 14%.
The star rating replaced the previous letter grades on the report cards, a change that resulted from a law passed by the Ohio General Assembly in 2021. Public schools are now measured by one to five stars, with one star representing the lowest performance and five the highest.
The Ohio Department of Education notes that “report cards are only one part of Ohio’s education story. To get a more complete picture, it is essential to visit schools, talk to educators, parents and students, and review school or district websites.”

The state uses data reported by districts and schools to analyze performance in several categories.
– Achievement: This component represents whether student performance on state tests met previously established thresholds. It also considers how well students performed on tests overall.
– Early Literacy: This area measures reading improvement and overall proficiency scores for kindergarten through third-grade students.
– Graduation: This measurement looks at the four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate and the five-year adjusted cohort graduation rate. The four-year rate includes only those students who earn diplomas within four years of entering ninth grade for the first time. The five-year rate consists of those students who graduate within five years of entering ninth grade for the first time.
– Progress: This measurement looks at students’ growth based on their past performances. Progress looks at the growth of students and schools compared to past state test performances.
– Gap Closing: This component measures the reduction in educational gaps for student subgroups based on income, race, ethnicity, or disability.
