BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 16 OCT – The Safety, Health and Environment Authority (SHENA) has organized an outreach program on the legal framework related to lifting equipment and the safe use of lifts, at the Main Auditorium, Floor 1, Design & Technology Building (D&T ), yesterday.
The implementation of the program aims to raise awareness among stakeholders about the importance of complying with relevant laws and safety standards related to lifting equipment including the safe use of lifts at work.
That is because the installation of an imperfect lift or the use of a damaged lift can bring serious danger and risk due to the lack of structural integrity or damage at any time which can result in death. The initiative was prompted by two workplace fatalities in 2020 and 2024 involving the use of homemade or modified cargo lifts.
During the program, SHENA emphasized the importance of complying with the legal framework and safety standards to ensure the safe operation of lifting equipment and avoid accidents.
The program as a whole featured presentations from expert members, including SHENA representatives and invited presenters, who among others provided valuable insights into the legal framework, safety requirements, as well as research and information related to lifting equipment.
The program was attended by representatives from the government sector and statutory bodies such as ABCi, DME JKR, BAPEQS, JPD, MPABD, lift service contractors registered under ABCi, transport companies, private companies involved in lifting operations (construction sector, oil and gas, automotive), building owners, representatives from supermarkets and convenience stores as well as certified inspectors and third party inspection agencies registered with SHENA.
The program also aims to strengthen cooperation between government agencies, lift service contractors, transport companies, building owners, and other relevant stakeholders in promoting safety and health at work.
