The song “Bauch Beine Po” by Berlin rapper Shirin David is not without controversy. Lines like: “Go to the gym, get skinny, make a show out of it/ We are pretty in bikinis, that’s belly, legs, butt” convey a outdated and above all sexist image of womencriticize David’s opponents.
Her supporters, i.e. fans, don’t have to disagree with that, the song’s success speaks for itself. It has been at the top of the singles charts for four weeks. GfK Entertainment, Investigators of the official German chartshas now named the song the summer hit of 2024. The criteria for this are lyrics that are easy to sing along to, a catchy melody that puts you in a good mood and a rhythm that invites you to dance.
“Bauch Beine Po” was released at the end of July and immediately went to the top of the charts. This makes it the seventh number one hit for the 29-year-old – something that, according to GfK, no other female solo act before her. The song also landed at the top in Austria (Austria Top 40); it also reached third place in Switzerland (Swiss Hit Parade).
