Despite a 15:11 (2:4,6:2 – 5:3,2:2) victory against the Turkish outsider Enka SC, the water polo players from Spandau 04 missed the qualification for the main round of the Champions League. After victories against Saloniki, AN Brescia and Enka and the defeat against CSM Oradea, the German record champions finished second in the playoff tournament behind the Romanian host Oradea. Internationally, Spandau will now continue in the second-tier Euro Cup.

Spandau got off to a weak start in the last qualifying match. It was only shortly before halftime that the 8:6 lead was secured. After that, the Berliners set the rhythm, but continued to concede too many goals due to a weak defense. The goals for Spandau were scored by Kristijan Culina (3), Ivan Vukojevic, Matej Caraj, Marek Tkac, Yannek Chiru, Marko Stamm (2 each), Mark Dyck and Zoran Bozovic (1 each).
