BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 6 OCT – In an effort to strengthen friendship and foster unity among ASEAN citizens, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (KKBS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (KHELN) and embassies and high commissions of the country- ASEAN countries are organizing ASEAN Sports Day 2024 at the Multipurpose Hall, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, today.
The ASEAN Sports Day held in conjunction with the 57th ASEAN Day Celebration is a commitment of all ASEAN member countries that was agreed upon during the Senior Officials for Sports Meeting (SOMS) held in November 2018 in Myanmar.
It is celebrated every August 8 with the aim of strengthening friendship and fostering unity, understanding and cooperation among the ASEAN community.
Present as guest of honor and participating in the walkathon was the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, the Honorable Dato Seri Setia Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad.
Also present were ambassadors and high commissioners from ASEAN countries, permanent secretaries of the Ministry of Defence, KHELN and KKBS and officials and special guests.
The event started with an aerobics session, followed by a mass walkathon of 3.2 kilometers which was joined by the Honorable Dato Seri Setia Haji Nazmi.
In addition, activities that are also highlighted include netball matches, futsal matches, exhibitions and game shows as well as traditional food from ASEAN countries.
The traditional games of the ASEAN countries that are highlighted are the Way of Three Legs and Tsang from Brunei Darussalam, Monkey Grab Leaves from Cambodia, proud from Malaysia and Patintero from the Philippines.
Meanwhile, three teams participated in the futsal match, namely the KKBS Team, the KHELN Team and the Embassy and High Commission Team of the ASEAN Countries.
The two teams that have participated in the netball match consist of Team KKBS and Team KHELN.
ASEAN Sports Day 2024 is the third time it has been held and for the second time it was held at the Multipurpose Hall, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, Berakas.
