State election: Finance Minister Lange misses direct mandate

Brandenburg’s Finance Minister Katrin Lange (SPD) has lost her direct mandate in the state elections in Brandenburg to the AfD candidate Torsten Arndt. According to the state election commission, Lange received 33.2 percent in the Prignitz II / Ostprignitz-Ruppin II constituency, while Arndt did significantly better with 36.2 percent, improving his result from 2019.

Five years ago, Lange, who entered the race in fourth place on the SPD state list, left the AfD politician behind. The finance minister was considered a candidate for the leadership post in the Brandenburg SPD in the event that Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke had withdrawn from government responsibility in the event of a defeat by the AfD. He had announced this before the election in the event of such an outcome.
