Storm Track 3 Forecast: Gusty winds bring fire danger, rain comes this weekend

Our wind makeup will not change much over the next 24 hours. Winds gusting from 30-45 MPH will be common with isolated gusts to 50 MPH.

A Wind Advisory will remain in effect through Friday for portions of central Kansas.

A storm system is taking shape to our southwest. It will be a slow-mover, stalling to the west and keeping Kansas in the zone to see several rounds of showers and storms.

A few sprinkles and showers will flirt with the Colorado state line overnight. It will largely be a miss tonight for our viewing area.

Lows will be cool but not quite cold as winds will keep things stirred up, which helps keep the temperature from dropping.

We must wait for this system to nudge a little closer to us to cash in on the rain. Western Kansas will see an uptick in scattered showers and a few thunderstorms into Friday night.

Highs tomorrow will be warm, mainly in the 70s with a few 60s to the northwest.

Stray showers will track into central Kansas through early Saturday but not have much success due to drier air eating away at them. The focus for rain Saturday and most of Sunday will be across western and west central Kansas as waves of moisture track around the parent low to our west.

This system gets cutoff from the flow and will eventually eject northeast across the Plains late Sunday into Monday. Late this weekend into Monday is when Wichita has a shot for showers and a few rumbles.

Rainfall potential will be highest near the Colorado state line where an inch or more of liquid gold is possible. Rainfall amounts will drop off farther east, but some should still be able to partake in a quarter to half inch of rain.

Winds over the weekend will also not be as strong. Due to thicker cloud cover and the off-on chance for rain, temperatures will be a few degrees cooler.

Highs into next week will be mild in the 70s with a few 80s trying to sneak into the state farther south Tuesday into Wednesday. There is a fast-moving and weak disturbance that will pop a shower over the Plains on Wednesday, but trends are pulling this away from our region. Looks a little cooler to end next week, but not significantly colder. Some frost is possible in the mornings farther northwest Thursday and Friday.
