Hot and windy for our Saturday across Kansas. With gusty winds, dry air, and dry grass, fire danger will be high.
The most critical fire danger will be found behind an advancing cold front. Despite cooling temperatures, the air in northern Kansas will be drier. Fire Weather Warnings have been issued for northern Kansas for this afternoon.
Wind gusts in the 30 to 40mph range will be common, with the strongest winds in north central Kansas.
Ahead of the front, temperatures will be downright hot by October standards.
Wichita’s record high for today is 95, and we are likely to tie or beat records in many cities across the state.
The cold front will sweep through tonight and bring cooling breezes. Temperatures fall to the 40s and 50s overnight, possibly as low as the 30s in northwest Kansas. Still totally dry.
Sunday overall looks much more pleasant. Still fairly warm, but temperatures will be more reasonable in the 70s and 80s. Winds also become lighter as they turn out of the northeast.
A weak disturbance will shuffle through the area Monday night to Tuesday morning and may just have enough moisture to squeeze out a few raindrops, particularly in south-central Kansas.
From there, more benignly warm and dry weather will persist. A few more sprinkles may visit western Kansas on Thursday, but meaningful moisture will be absent. Down the road, there is hope of a pattern change around the middle of October, but we will have to wait at least another 10 days before it gets here.
