Stolen automobile: Lorain Road
Employees of Mercedes-Benz of North Olmsted reported to the police department on Sept. 9 that a G550 luxury SUV had been stolen from the dealership.
A driver in a white tractor-trailer came into the dealership several days earlier with information seeming to confirm that he was supposed to transport the vehicle to Illinois. The SUV was loaded onto the semi and hauled away. However, the vehicle never arrived at its destination in Illinois, and a company that helped coordinate the booking and transportation of the vehicle told the North Olmsted dealership of suspected “fraudulent behavior” involving the company that picked up the SUV, according to a police report.
The missing vehicle began “pinging” in Arizona near the border of California, prompting police officers in both states to look for it, according to a police report. The vehicle was recovered in Stockton, Calif., by the California Highway Patrol. There was no damage to the vehicle, and a suspect was taken into custody in California, according to the North Olmsted police report.
Shoplifting: Great Northern Boulevard
Officers at 3:31 p.m. on Sept. 9 responded to a report of a shoplifting at Going, Going, Gone, a discount athletic goods store on Great Northern Boulevard.
The officers found a suspect matching the description provided by the store’s loss prevention staff sitting in a car outside the store. The suspect was wearing new white and orange Nike shoes, which matched the description of what store employees said was stolen. The suspect told officers that he “unintentionally” switched out his old shoes with the new shoes and walked out of the store. He said that he was willing to pay for the shoes.
The shoes were valued at $99. The suspect was charged with misdemeanor theft.
Shoplifting: Great Northern Mall
JCPenney store security called the North Olmsted Police Department at 4 p.m. on Sept. 9 regarding a woman they had in custody suspected of shoplifting.
A loss prevention officer watching security cameras said he saw a woman carrying a diaper bag select multiple pieces of merchandise from the infants’ department on the second floor and then get into an elevator. When she emerged on the first floor, all the items appeared to have been concealed in the diaper bag. The woman then exited the store without paying for the merchandise. She was stopped by a loss prevention officer. The woman said she exited the store after her child ran out the door.
Security and police officers recovered 18 clothing items valued at $265. She was charged with petty theft shoplifting.
