Tel doesn’t ignite, Olise “in good role”

In the offensive department around striker Harry Kane, FC Bayern has winners and losers at the start of the season. Youngster Mathys Tel had hoped for more playing time and goals at the start of his third year in Munich. But so far, the fan favorite has not been able to build on his promising preparation.

Before the German record champions’ Bundesliga away game against SV Werder Bremen on Saturday (3.30 p.m./Sky), 19-year-old Tel’s goal tally is still zero, in contrast to new signing Michael Olise, who has made an excellent start.

Coach Vincent Kompany and the Munich bosses, however, reacted calmly. Looking to the future, sporting director Christoph Freund made it clear: “It is not an issue that Mathys will be loaned out.” Kompany emphasised: “I was once a young player too. It is completely normal for there to be fluctuations. He just has to keep going. We believe in him.”

Freund said that Tel had “convinced us during the preparations.” The young Frenchman is also always self-critical and works hard on himself every day. “He will score again and regain his confidence,” said the sports director.

Olympia gave Olise a boost

Tel’s compatriot Olise, who was signed from Crystal Palace for €53 million, seems to have quickly justified the high price with top performances in a new environment. The 22-year-old has already scored once in the Bundesliga and even scored twice on his debut in the Champions League in a 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb.

“He is already playing a good role and will make many more good steps. Now he should continue like this,” commented Kompany. In retrospect, it is a positive thing that Olise – unlike Tel – was allowed to take part in the Olympic football tournament in Paris, where the attacker won silver with France.

“He came back very fit,” said Kompany, even though this meant that Olise was late in starting his preseason training in Munich. “Michael played very well at the Olympics,” said Freund. “A lot is new for him, a lot is happening around him right now, including in the national team. We are very happy that things have started this way with Michael.”
