The cooling tower of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Ukraine was badly damaged by a fire last month and will probably have to be demolished, said Raphael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is part of the United Nations.

He visited the nuclear power plant on September 4.

“This large structure is not suitable for future use, so it will probably be demolished at some point,” Grossi wrote on the X-page.

  • The largest nuclear power plant in Europe is occupied by Russia from 2022. The facility has been the target of repeated attacks and sabotage, which Moscow and Kiev blame each other for.
  • Grossi said in mid-August that the security situation was “deteriorating”.
