The Miri Sea was identified for OTEC study

KUCHING, 29 OCT – The waters near the city of Miri, in the northern part of Sarawak have been identified for the implementation of the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) study in an effort to diversify its new energy sources.

The Premier of Sarawak, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the sea area near Miri was chosen because of its background and suitable depth.

“This technology is relevant for tropical areas that have high sea surface temperatures and cold deep sea water, as well as precise sea depths.

“We are still doing a study, this study will probably take a year and a half and we already have data that allows us to extract energy from the sea, we want to do a study offshore Miri,” he said after officiating the Sarawak Sustainability Master Plan Conference here today .

Abang Johari said if the study is successful, the technology will enable Sarawak to produce excess energy to be exported to ASEAN countries. “Green energy is very necessary in the world today, that’s why we also need people who can make investments, such as financial funds in addition to research,” he said. He said in addition to OTEC, Sarawak is also committed to studying how to produce kinetic energy from ocean waves as an additional source of green energy.

Abang Johari was previously reported as saying that the effort was to find renewable energy sources, in addition to gas, hydroelectricity and solar. – Named
