Two killed following crash on Kansas highway

CLAY CENTER, Kan. (KSNT) – A 72-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman were killed, and three others were seriously injured in a crash on Saturday. The crash happened around 3:55 p.m. west of Clay Center in Clay County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, an 18-year-old man from Clay Center was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger east on U.S. Highway 24. A 47-year-old man from Shawnee was driving a 2004 Toyota Sienna west on U.S. 24. For an unknown reason, the 18-year-old crossed the center line and entered the westbound lane. The two vehicles hit head-on.

There were four passengers in the Toyota Sienna. Robert M. McCollum and Alma J. Wright, both of Gardner, were killed in the crash. Two other occupants, an 80-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, both from Gardner, were seriously injured. The 18-year-old driver of the Ford Ranger was also taken to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Neither Wright nor McCollum were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
