FRANKFURT, OCT 20 – United States (US) historian Anne Applebaum will be awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade at the end of the Frankfurt Book Fair on Sunday, the German news agency (dpa) reported.

The eulogy will be delivered at St Paul’s Church, Frankfurt by Irina Scherbakowa, a German linguist, historian and well-known human rights activist from Russia.

“At a time when the values and achievements of democracy are increasingly belittled and attacked, his work is an important and invaluable contribution to preserving democracy and peace,” the prize selection panel said in a statement.

Applebaum’s work exposes the mechanisms of authoritarian coups and protection of power and shows how fragile democratic societies are, according to the statement.

With a total prize of US$27,170, the Peace Prize has been awarded by the German Publishers and Booksellers Association since 1950. It honors individuals who contribute to the realization of the idea of peace through literature, science or art. – Named
