Actor Uwe Ochsenknecht, now 68, has apparently become a little more mellow with age. “I don’t get angry anymore, it’s too stupid for me. I believe that everything that happens in life has a reason. It’s a kind of basic trust. And what’s the point of getting upset about things that you can’t change yourself?” he said in an interview with the German Press Agency in Munich. “Nothing good rarely comes out of these uncontrolled, instinctive moments. Why are people always so angry when the train doesn’t come or they miss the flight? Getting upset about it doesn’t change anything.”

Ochsenknecht’s new film “The Irony of Life” is opening in cinemas. In it, he plays an ageing comedy star who meets his ex-wife, who is suffering from cancer, falls in love with her again, spends her last months with her – and learns what is important in life.

Ochsenknecht and Harfouch as (ex-)couple

Ochsenknecht raved about his film partner Corinna Harfouch (69, “Lara”), who plays Eva, who is suffering from cancer: “Acting is like tennis. A great rally only happens when the other player not only receives the ball, but also returns it well. Unfortunately, often nothing comes back, but with Corinna it comes back fourfold,” he said. The film was an “emotional rollercoaster”. It catapulted him to “dizzying emotional heights”.

“You don’t always need a moment of shock to remember the important things in life,” said Ochsenknecht. “Some time ago I made a conscious decision to live more consciously. You have to want to do that.”

He is pleased that his new film focuses on the love between two people who are no longer 20, as he said: “I think this youth craze in film and television is slowly changing. But that only makes sense. We have so many people over 50 – and they are also the ones who have money and spend it to go to the cinema.”
