Violence against women is a global problem

The United Nations has strongly condemned the killing of Ugandan Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei by her partner. The tragic death highlights a “larger problem,” said UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric in New York: “On average, every eleven minutes somewhere in the world a woman or girl is killed by her partner or family member.” Gender-based violence is one of the most common human rights violations in the world.

“As the Secretary-General (António Guterres) once said: We live in a male-dominated culture that makes women vulnerable by denying them equality, dignity and rights. We all pay the price for this. Our societies are less peaceful, our economies less prosperous and our world less fair – but another world is possible,” Dujarric continued. 33-year-old Cheptegei died as a result of an arson attack. According to police, her partner poured petrol on her and set her on fire. There had previously been an argument between the two over a piece of land, among other things.
