Voters to decide on Brunswick Schools operating levy renewal Nov. 5

Voters to decide on Brunswick Schools operating levy renewal Nov. 5

BRUNSWICK, Ohio — Voters in Brunswick, Brunswick Hills Township and a portion of Hinckley Township will decide Nov. 5 on the renewal of an existing Brunswick City Schools operating levy originally passed in 1994.

According to district officials, the levy brings in $3.2 million annually for district operations. It is one of five emergency levies that fund district operations.

Superintendent Jason Niedermeyer explained that the emergency levies are so named because they represent “a finite amount of money over a finite period of time,” requiring them to be renewed by voters. He said that 62% of district operations are funded locally and, if passed, the renewal will not increase taxes; tax payers will continue to pay the same 61.25 per year, per $100,000 of property valuation they are currently paying.

Niedermeyer added that as an emergency levy, the millage has reduced since 1994 – from 7.8 mills to 2 mills – as the community has continued to grow.

“The cost has decreased significantly since 1994 and the continued growth that happens in our community will continue to lessen the amount taxpayers have to pay,” Niedermeyer said.

He noted that in March this levy renewal was defeated for the first time since 1994, by a 121-vote margin. Niedermeyer said that if voters support the levy in November, the district does not anticipate having to seek another renewal until 2028.

He added that these operating funds are not related to bond issues that are used “to build things,” but rather are for operations and “directly impact students.”
