Westlake Alumni Hall of Fame welcomes eight new members

As the current students at Westlake High School celebrate Homecoming throughout the week of Sept. 30 to Oct. 7, the Westlake Alumni Association will be celebrating the accomplishments of alumni as eight new members will be inducted into the Westlake Alumni Hall of Fame.

The Induction Ceremony and Dinner will take place at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at the LaCentre Banquet Facility, 25777 Detroit Road, Westlake.

“The Westlake Hall of Fame was founded in 1991,” said Jim Leitch, Hall of Fame chairman, in an email. “With this year’s class, we have 80 members. People are nominated. The Westlake Hall of Fame is unique in that it consists of three categories.  Athletic – teams or individuals  who excelled in sports during their high school career.  Distinguished  – an individual who brought honor to Westlake High School after they graduated through their career endeavors. Honorary Members – to recognize teachers, coaches, administrators or community leaders who have contributed to make the Westlake City Schools a tremendous school system.”

This year’s members Distinguished members include: Wendy Shiba (Class of 1968):  A student-scholar in high school, she was involved in numerous activities including Yearbook. The Temple University Law School graduate went on to a distinguished career as attorney and executive for several major corporations. She has received numerous awards from the American Bar Association and is an advocate for women and diversity.

Will Ryan (Class of 1967): He created the local Cleveland music comedy duo called Willio & Phillio. He later went to Hollywood where he had a distinguished career. Ryan provided voices for short animated projects including Disney’s “Willie the Giant”, “Winnie the Pooh in a Day for Eeyore”, and the Oscar-nominated animated film “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”. He was nominated for Primetime Emmy as part of Nickelodeon’s “World of Dr. Seuss” and also earned two Gold Records as part of Cactus County Cowboys. He passed away at age 72 in 2021.

Jenni Meno-Sand (Class of 1989):  She was a world-class pairs skater with her partner and now husband Todd Sand. The pair were United States Pairs Champions from 1994 to 1996; Silver medalists at the 1998 World Championship; and competed in three Olympic games (1992, 1994 and 1998). They are also  members of the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame.

Athletic category members include: Ron Laraway (Class of 1979): A multi-sport athlete, he averaged 25 points a game in his senior basketball season and was selected Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Southwestern Conference (SWC), as well as  All-State. He graduated as the all-time single season scoring leader. In addition to basketball, Laraway excelled in football and was an All-SWC quarterback who later played at North Carolina State.

Frank Frostino ( Class of 1991). The soccer star was named MVP of the SWC, All-State and a High School All-American. He went on to excel at Bowling Green State University and was a Mid-American Conference athlete. He played professionally with the Canton Invaders.

Kelsey Fenix Cameron (Class of 2004). A multi-sport athlete in soccer, basketball and softball, she earned several SWC All-Conference honors, All-Ohio, and was a High School All-American her senior year. She went on to play soccer at the University of Kentucky. She is currently the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Belmont University.

Lauren Golick (Class of 2013). The outstanding tennis (129-14 record) player was the Girls Tennis State Champion her senior year. She was named the Plain Dealer Player of the Year three times. She went to Cleveland State University.

The 1982-1983 Girls Basketball Team, led by Coach Bill Shollenberger (the first girls basketball coach in program history) will be honored this year. The team played in the State Final 4 in 1983, the farthest for any basketball team in school history. The team compiled a 24-3 record in the 1982-1983 season led by six senior players, and averaged 64 points per game while only giving up 37 points per game.

The public is welcome to attend the induction ceremony/dinner. Cost is $50 per person or $400 for a reserve table of eight. To purchase tickets, go to
