Wichita City Council to consider gunshot detecting devices, water plant agreement

Wichita City Council to consider gunshot detecting devices, water plant agreement

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Wichita City Council has a full agenda for Tuesday’s meeting.

The council will decide whether to approve the purchase of Flock cameras and gunshot technology for the Wichita Police Department. In 2002, the WPD began using Flock Raven gunshot detection devices in places considered hotspots for gun crime. Based on a hotspot analysis of crime in Wichita, the department wants to add two square miles of coverage. The council will consider the WPD’s request to add 31 Flock license plate reading cameras.

Also, the council will consider hiring a company to run the new Wichita Water Works Facility temporarily. Mayor Lily Wu told KSN News that the City has struggled to find workers since the old facility still has to run.

“The City of Wichita is still continuing to hire people for the new water treatment plant. They’ve been doing this over the last several months and have not been very successful in getting more people in,” Wu said.

Even if the City decides to hire the company, it will still recruit workers. The one-year contract would cost $1.3 million.

The council will consider issuing a letter of intent for the Market Centre office building at 155 N. Market. A developer wants the City to issue $30 million in industrial revenue bonds (IRBs) to convert the 11-story building into 114 affordable housing units, which will be named Market Centre Apartments.
