Led by match winner Jonathan Burkardt, FSV Mainz celebrated its first win of the season in the Bundesliga in a wild football match with two sendings off at FC Augsburg. In the duel between the Danish coaches, Bo Henriksen was able to celebrate a 3:2 (2:1) win against his compatriot Jess Thorup at the start of the 4th matchday, which was partly fought out in a minority. In the table, Mainz moved five points ahead of FCA (4).
Man of the evening in front of 30,660 spectators in the sold-out Augsburg Arena was captain Burkardt, who scored twice (15th/49th minute). Armindo Sieb scored the 1-0 for Mainz with his first Bundesliga goal (13th minute). In Mainz’s early double header, full-back Philipp Mwene crossed precisely on both occasions.
In the end, Mainz had to survive six minutes of stoppage time, which they managed thanks to a lot of luck and a strong reaction from goalkeeper Robin Zentner when Steve Mounié attempted an overhead kick. In the last second of stoppage time, the referee even awarded a penalty to Augsburg, but reversed the decision after a very long video review. In the end, the hectic match lasted over 100 minutes.
First Amiri flies, then Essende
The defensively vulnerable Augsburg team struck back twice through defender Keven Schlotterbeck (25th) and attacker Samuel Essende (57th). However, after his goal, Essende kicked former Augsburg player Dominik Kohr after a provocation and was shown the red card (70th).
In doing so, he caused his team just as much damage as former Mainz international Amiri, who received a yellow-red card within two minutes after just over half an hour (35th minute). First, the midfielder complained after a foul whistle from referee Sören Storks and received the first yellow card. Less than 120 seconds later, Amiri committed a tactical foul on Ruben Vargas on the halfway line (!): That was the end for him.

Henriksen reacted and brought on Aymen Barkok for the goalscorer Sieb to provide defensive reinforcement. The ten Mainz players stood very deep and tried to defend their lead. They managed that until half-time, at least, because Vargas missed a great chance with a poorly placed shot from the half-left position.
Thorup’s signal at half-time was: Everything forward! The FCA coach took out defender Maximlian Bauer and strengthened the offense with Steve Mounié as a second striker alongside Essende. A lot of pyrotechnics were set off in the Augsburg fan block.
The smoke had not yet cleared when Mainz struck for the third time. Burkardt reacted quickly to a cross from Barkok and extended it into the goal with the tip of his foot at the far post. Was that it for Mainz? No. The defensively unstable Augsburg team took the next blow. Essende rose up and headed the ball into the right corner. But then the Augsburg attacker lost his nerve and weakened his team, who attacked in vain despite being equal on equal terms.
