BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, OCT 14 – A local woman was ordered by the Magistrate’s Court to pay a fine of $56,390 after she pleaded guilty to possessing contraband cigarettes.
If she fails to pay the fine, Zarinah binti Mahmud will have to serve 15 months in prison.
Magistrate Syarifah Nur Baqiyah binti Malai Shahran heard from the customs prosecution that the defendant was arrested on 21 January 2021, during an operation carried out by the Enforcement Division of the Royal Customs and Excise Department at a residence in the RPN Mengkubau area.
Zarinah was found to have 53 cartons and 36 packets of cigarettes.
All looted items including cigarettes were ordered to be forfeited to the government and destroyed.
