LYON, 11 SEPT – The WorldSkills Competition (WSC 2024) officially opened its doors yesterday, marking the beginning of the struggle of 15 highly skilled youth from Malaysia to reach the target of three medals at this Games.

The opening event of the WSC 2024, which is the third largest event in France after the Olympic and Paralympic Games, was inaugurated by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron at the LDLC Arena, the venue of the largest event in Lyon.

At the event, all the national contingents participating in the WSC marched in carrying their respective national flags with thunderous cheers.

Palestine, through the participation of a youth, also received cheers and thunderous applause from more than 12,000 attendees who filled the LDLC Arena at the event.

WSC 2024, which runs until September 15, brings together 1,400 competitors from over 70 countries and regions to compete in 62 skill categories.

Malaysia participated in 14 of these categories, including Robotic System Integration, IT Software Solutions for Business, Heavy Vehicle Technology and Digital Construction.

By lining up highly skilled youths from various Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, Malaysia is certainly aiming to reap the first gold medal at this Games.

Regardless of the success achieved by the Malaysian youth at the WSC 2024, the TVET field can no longer be viewed in isolation or considered as a second career choice, as it clearly opens up vast opportunities and space for young people.

Focus, provision, and continuous exposure in TVET need to be emphasized to produce local youth who are skilled and who are up for grabs at the international level.

The President of WorldSkills International (WSI), Chris Humphries in a press conference yesterday, said that investment in skills is important because it is an effective way to create jobs and build a sustainable economy.

He said skills are the key to empowering youth, reducing inequality, stimulating industrial competitiveness and ensuring sustainability.

Previously, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasized that Malaysia’s participation in WSC 2024 will allow the country to explore various technologies and best practices in the TVET sector at the international level. – Named
