From this evening, it will be much more difficult to travel to the capital’s BER airport using public transport. Due to construction work, the airport cannot be reached by S-Bahn until November 7th. Deutsche Bahn, the operator of the Berlin S-Bahn, is setting up a replacement bus service during this time. Passengers can change from Berlin to the faster regional trains such as the RE 8, the airport express FEX or the RB 23.

According to the railway, extensive underground cable construction work is necessary to equip the route with the digital train protection system ZBS. During the construction work, the signal box in Schöneweide will be converted to electronic signal box technology. In addition, additional switches and new systems for supplying the S-Bahn with electricity will be installed. Tracks will also be renewed during the construction work.

Three construction phases, planned completion on the morning of November 8

The first construction phase begins this evening at 10 p.m. and lasts until Monday night. During this time, the S-Bahn trains between BER airport and Baumschulenweg will be cancelled. In the second construction phase, from Monday morning until the morning of October 14, the S-Bahn service between the airport and Schöneweide will be interrupted. After that, the section between the airport and Adlershof will be closed to S-Bahn traffic until November 8, 1:30 a.m.

There will also be timetable changes on other S-Bahn connections in southeast Berlin due to the construction work. The route between Spindlersfeld and Schöneweide will be closed between October 18 (10 p.m.) and November 4 (1:30 a.m.). During this time, the S47 will only run between Schöneweide and Hermannstraße. There will be replacement bus services on the closed section.
