CDU state executive committee supports election loser Redmann

The Brandenburg CDU wants to continue its work with Jan Redmann as state chairman despite the defeat in the last state election. In a secret ballot, 19 of 20 of the voting members of the state executive board voted for Redmann to remain as state chairman. This was announced by the CDU state association in Potsdam. There was one abstention.

Defeat in the state elections

The CDU landed at 12.1 percent in the state elections in Brandenburg on Sunday. The party thus fell far short of its own ambitions. Redmann had entered the election campaign with the premise of succeeding Dietmar Woidke (SPD) as state premier. In the 2019 state elections, the CDU had achieved 15.6 percent.

Redmann is combative – even in the opposition

Redmann had already announced shortly after the election that he did not want to resign. “I made it clear yesterday evening that I will not shirk my responsibility,” he said after the state executive committee’s decision. “Our country and our party are facing enormous challenges.” The path that lies ahead for the party would not be possible without the trust of the state executive committee.

Redmann said that the CDU would not necessarily be part of the next government. “Even in opposition, we will campaign for better education policy. We will fight to ensure that security continues to be a top priority in Brandenburg and that our economy gets back on track,” he said, according to the state party’s statement. Only with real solutions can trust in the political center be rebuilt.

Secretary General puts own office up for debate

At the meeting of the state executive committee, General Secretary Gordon Hoffmann openly put his position up for discussion. However, according to the party, the state executive committee rejected this.
