STREETSBORO, Ohio — A Bedford Heights man has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide after police say he crashed head-on into another vehicle while driving under the influence, killing a 63-year-old Kent man.
Devonte Anthony also is charged with OVI and operating left-of-center in connection with the crash that killed George Shiner, according to a news release from Streetsboro police.
The charges come more than six months after the crash occurred on Ohio 43, just south of Kennedy Road. Police say that just before 6:30 a.m. on March 14, Anthony, who was 33 years old at the time, was driving a 2019 Honda Accord north when he tried to pass multiple slower-moving vehicles even though there was a double-yellow line on the road and he was approaching the crest of a hill.
Shiner was driving a 2010 Honda Accord south and was hit head-on by Anthony’s vehicle, police say. Shiner was taken to a hospital by ambulance but died of his injuries.
Police say in a news release that “impairment and impatience” caused the crash.
“In plain English, Devonte Anthony was under the influence, he traveled over the double-yellow line (to pass slower moving cars) and then crashed head-on into an oncoming car, resulting in the death of Mr. Shiner,” police say.
Anthony also was seriously injured in the crash, police say.
