Sport: Messi’s five assists all came in the second half of the match. That many assists by a single player in the same half has never happened before in the North American league.
Nor has a player been involved in six goals in the same half. Messi managed that too in what were 45 sparkling closing minutes of Inter Miami. The New York Red Bulls led 1-0 at the break, but then got the hat fit.
Luis Suárez scored three goals and a real hat-trick in 12 minutes. Matias Rojas, on his part, scored twice, while Messi accounted for the last goal.
Sweden’s Emil Forsberg scored a consolation goal for New York just before full time.
Messis now has 10 goals and 12 assists in eight league games so far this season.
– What we have seen today naturally surprises people, because you never see things like that in football, said Luis Suarez about his friend Messi’s five assists.
– But as a teammate and someone who knows him, there is nothing that surprises me about him, added the Uruguayan.
37-year-old Suarez has scored ten goals in 11 league games for Miami.
