Photovoltaic expansion in Berlin continues to progress

The number of installed photovoltaic (PV) systems in Berlin continues to rise sharply. Almost 26,800 systems were registered with the electricity network operator in June this year, according to the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office. That was almost 50 percent more than in the same period last year.

However, the share of renewables in total electricity generation is changing only slowly. Only 5.4 percent of the electricity fed into the grid in Berlin in the first half of the year came from renewable energy sources – that is 0.7 percent more than in the same period last year. PV systems accounted for just under two percent of the electricity fed into the grid.

Things are looking much better in Brandenburg. In the first half of the year, more than 53 percent of the electricity fed into the grid came from renewables. Wind power is the main source here, accounting for almost 35 percent. PV accounted for 12.4 percent. The number of systems in Brandenburg rose by 44 percent to more than 105,800 systems in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year.
