Accidents and natural disasters: A search and rescue operation was launched after the defense lost contact with the helicopters, which were conducting nightly training over the sea areas south of Tokyo, near the island of Tori-shima.

It involved two SH-60K helicopters. Each of them had four crew members on board. One of the eight was saved. The other seven are missing, a military spokesman said on Sunday.

Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara told reporters on Sunday that rescuers had spotted what are believed to be parts of a helicopter in the sea.
