State election: AfD: Blocking minority gives more scope for shaping

After the election, the AfD’s top candidate in Brandenburg, Hans-Christoph Berndt, spoke of “new opportunities” in view of the blocking minority achieved in the state parliament. He mentioned, for example, the influence on the election of constitutional judges in Brandenburg. The state’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies the AfD state association as a suspected right-wing extremist case and Berndt as a right-wing extremist.

The AfD politician said the day after the election in Potsdam: “In future, we will prevent the constitution from being arbitrarily changed in the way it has been over the last five years, so that the parties can gain a tactical advantage when electing the presidium, for example.” The AfD will prevent “state constitutional judges from being elected who are not qualified for their task, or we will prevent ourselves from being undemocratically kept out of this body,” Berndt continued. “This gives us completely new options.” He also called for the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution to withdraw its surveillance of the AfD.

The AfD managed to win a so-called blocking minority – for the second time after its success in Thuringia three weeks ago. With 30 of 88 seats, it will now have more than a third of the mandates and can thus prevent decisions that require a two-thirds majority.

In the state elections, the SPD received 30.9 percent. The AfD received 29.2 percent. The Sahra Wagenknecht coalition, which was running for the first time, came in third place with 13.5 percent, while the CDU only achieved 12.1 percent. The Greens, the Left Party and the FDP failed to clear the five percent hurdle.
