Mall kiosk worker arrested when seen wearing $1,400 Gucci watch found in restroom: Beachwood police blotter

BEACHWOOD, Ohio —

Theft: Cedar Road

At 9:25 a.m. Sept. 22, a New York man, 40, contacted police stating that two items he bought at Saks Fifth Avenue at Beachwood Place had been stolen while he was still in the mall.

The man said he used a restroom, but when he left the restroom, he forgot to take with him a bag that contained a Gucci watch, valued at $1,479, and a gold Gucci chain, valued at $648.

When he returned to the private restroom, the bag was still there, but its contents had been removed.

Mall security provided video, which captured a man who works at a mall kiosk leaving the restroom shortly after the complainant.

Officers found the suspect working at the kiosk and wearing the watch. The suspect told police he did not want to turn in what he found in the bag to mall security because he believed they would steal it.

The police report does not mention the whereabouts of the stolen chain.

Police made arrangements with the victim to have his brother collect the watch from the police station.

The suspect, 29, of Westlake, was charged with theft, a fifth-degree felony.

Theft: Chagrin Boulevard

At 3:10 p.m. Sept. 17, police responded to a call from loss prevention at Giant Eagle, 24601 Chagrin Blvd. A loss prevention employee told police that a man left the store after concealing several items in a white suitcase he carried.

Loss prevention recognized the man from past incidents.

Police located the man nearby on Chagrin Boulevard and also recognized the man from past thefts. The suspect said that he did not steal anything while at Giant Eagle, adding that he was in the store, but did not make a purchase.

Police checked the suitcase and a purse the man carried. No stolen goods were found.

It was learned, however, that the man, 36, of Highland Heights, was wanted on a Shaker Heights Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear on a prior Beachwood theft matter.

Police took the suspect back to Giant Eagle. Loss prevention told officers that the man was seen concealing the items and stopped. In the suitcase 30 items totaling $179.53 were found.

The suspect, however, left the store as loss prevention was processing the theft and before police could be called. When told by loss prevention to stop, the man refused to return.

Police arrested the man on a theft charge and granted the store’s request to issue him a criminal trespass warning.

Property damage: Mercantile Road

At 2:25 p.m. Sept. 18, police were dispatched to the area around 23250 Mercantile Road, where a woman had driven her Toyota Prius into wet concrete. The street’s eastbound lane had been closed off so that the street surface could be poured.

There were posted signs and cones in the street blocking the east lane, but the woman, 72, of Cleveland Heights, told police the cones were situated in a way she did not fully understand. The Toyota’s passenger side tires were stuck in the concrete, necessitating a tow.

Police cited the woman for not obeying a traffic control device.

Theft: Cedar Road

At 8 p.m. Sept. 18, as a loss prevention employee watched, a woman concealed 14 items totaling $601 in a backpack she carried into the store Sephora at Beachwood Place mall, 26300 Cedar Road.

The suspect, 28, of Cleveland, was detained immediately after she left the store. Police charged the woman with theft and banned her from returning to the mall for one year.

Counterfeiting: Cedar Road

At 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19, police were called to the Beachwood Place store H&M, where it was determined that a man used a counterfeit $100 bill to buy a pair of white socks.

The clerk followed store procedure and called her manager to check the bill, but also gave the suspect $81.10 in change before the manager scanned the bill and found it was a fake.

The man, 30, of Milwaukee, left the store after getting his change and then ran from security. He was eventually apprehended in the mall parking lot.

At the Beachwood jail, it was learned that the man was wanted on an Erie County warrant for counterfeiting.

When told at the jail to remove his underwear, the man refused. Police saw he had concealed in his underwear a soft white object, possibly an envelope. At the store, the man was seen on video removing the fake $100 bill from a white envelope.

Before police could act, the man quickly removed the envelope, threw it in a toilet, and flushed. Police could not remove it from the toilet. The man told police there was marijuana concealed in the envelope.

Police charged the man with counterfeiting and he was granted no bond.

Domestic violence: Park East Drive

At 1:10 a.m. Sept. 21, officers were dispatched to the Embassy Suites hotel, 3775 Park East Drive, where a woman reported that she had been assaulted by her boyfriend.

As officers arrived, they spotted the suspect outside of the hotel. The man ran, but was quickly apprehended. In his backpack, officers found a knife and two debit cards belonging to another man.

The suspect, 34, of Maple Heights, said he had argued with his girlfriend over an unpaid electric bill, but that no violence took place.

He had a cut on his chin and scratches on his neck. He said the cut was from biting his own lip, and the scratches came about while he was engaged in sex with the woman.

The woman, however, said the man punched her in the face during their argument. She told him to leave and he grabbed items belonging to her before trying to leave.

She told police that she tried to get back her items and the man responded by punching her twice more in the face. He then grabbed her by the hair and kneed her in the face. The woman had swelling of her face and other bruises, but declined medical attention.

The woman told officers that she has lived with the man for six months and that she is two-and-a-half months pregnant. The man told police he was unaware of her pregnancy.

Police arrested the man on charges of domestic violence and obstructing official business.

At 3:55 p.m. Sept. 21, officers were dispatched to the Beachwood Place parking lot where a Nordstrom’s loss prevention employee was following a theft suspect. The suspect refused to stop until mall security arrived and stopped her.

The woman, 25, of Euclid, was accused of concealing in a bag she carried five items totaling $610. The woman had taken the items into a fitting room and when she emerged, she placed two items back on a rack. Loss prevention, however, saw that her bag was more full than when she entered the fitting room.
