After winning his first world snooker title, number twelve seed Hazel Irvine of the BBC spoke at The Crucible Theater in Sheffield. Wilson was allowed to talk about his life’s work, because that was what this title was. He immediately got people laughing: “Can you imagine how embarrassing it would have been if I had lost this final and Bailey was dressed like that?”
His two sons were clearly dressed for the occasion and the younger of the two was taken aback. “This means so much to all of us. My parents sacrificed their entire lives to get me here. My brother Taylor, my wife Sophie: the list is endless.”
Kyren thinks one of the worst things to watch on YouTube is a video of The Masters in which he cries. “And this is getting much worse. I said I would never cry on TV again, but I can’t help it,” said Wilson, who was handed a tissue by Irvine.
It takes two to tango
Then came praise for opponent Jak Jones, who struggled through the qualifications for the second year in a row. Last year it came to an end in the quarter-finals, now the Welshman was a finalist. Jones fell behind 7-0, but fought back tremendously in this final battle.
“I don’t think there are any people in Wales at the moment. When I heard how hard they supported him here,” Wilson also started this part of his story with a smile. “They created a great atmosphere, all credit to them.”
“Jak and I played a lot together in youth, had many training matches together in Gloucester. This was his first final, let alone a World Cup final. He has shown himself in a great way and I am sure he will return well,” Wilson was full of credit The Silent Assassin.
Elephant in the room
After which Hazel just threw a ball: “It’s nice to have your children here with you. The big question is whether this performance tonight has changed Bailey’s mind. Do you think he still has Judd Trump as his favorite player?”
The youngest Wilson himself already answered in the background: he shook his head no, Trump is still his favorite. “Oh well, you can’t please everyone,” Wilson said with a laugh. “I try to inspire the younger generation, hopefully I inspire my own children.”
“Our boys were interviewed this week and were asked who their sports idol is. They said Cristiano Ronaldo… I hope I have overtaken him now,” Wilson also laughed with the audience at the end of his story.
He himself wanted to say something to the audience. “I just wanted to thank everyone for making this moment so special. This was taken away from me (in 2020, ed.) in the covid final, so you know: I will never forget this moment. Thank you everyone,” said the brand new world champion.
