Tom Hanks enjoyed a spot of reading at The London Library, and the Hollywood star’s presence didn’t go unnoticed.

Lurking in the history section you can find many books and materials on World War II – and the 67-year-old Forrest Gump actor delighting in them.

The star was said to be particularly impressed with the ‘rich variety’ of the library’s open-access collections.

As somewhat of a history fan, the American actor perused original issues from June 1944 of the Normandy Landings.

The megastar would have an interest in this particular time and place, as these events were expertly conveyed in World War II classic Saving Private Ryan, in which Tom played Captain Miller alongside Matt Damon as the titular character.

The star’s visit seemed pretty random, as Tom thought he’d pop in after reading about the library in Simon Winchester’s book Knowing What We Know.

‘This weekend we were thrilled to welcome very special guest @tomhanks to The London Library!’ said the library’s official Instagram page.

‘While touring the Library, Tom was delighted to discover our fascinating history and long illustrious list of past members, including film director Stanley Kubrick and other fellow Americans, Mark Twain and Paul Robeson.

‘While exploring the stacks, Tom was impressed by the rich variety of our extensive open-access collections.

They continued: ‘We were delighted to show Tom our collections and see how inspired and impressed he was by the Library. We look forward to welcoming him back in the future for another visit.

‘Thanks to Library member Simon Winchester for writing about the Library and inspiring Tom’s impromptu visit!’

The page then asked for people to recommend the Hollywood star some books, and the post was met with floods of comments.

However, not all were laden with useful recs as many Londoners simply couldn’t contain their excitement.

‘Next time can we have some advance warning please,’ commented one, while another said: ‘How exciting!! I love Tom…he’s my favorite actor of all time!!❤️📚❤️.’

Another fan simple write: ‘Omg, swoon ❤️.’
