People’s Place in Kingston hands out nearly 1,500 Thanksgiving meals – Daily Freeman

KINGSTON, NY – Nearly 1,500 Thanksgiving meals were distributed Monday to people seeking holiday feasts at People’s Place, an agency that serves the needy.

Christine Hein, executive director of People’s Place in Midtown, said that 1,475 Thanksgiving meals were handed out at the Broadway and St. James Street facility.

He said just about 1,600 people registered for the meals which included turkeys, apple pie, sweet and white potatoes, and corn, among other foodstuffs.

The number of meals handed out on Monday was about 200 more than last year, Hein said.

Hein said that on Tuesday, Nov. 21, those who missed out on Monday’s giveaway can visit People’s Place between 10 am and noon to get the free meals. Hein said those seeking the holiday fare do not have to be registered.

About 1,400 turkeys were donated by Diamond Mills Hotel, a luxury hotel, restaurant, wedding venue, and event space in Saugerties. The remainder of the turkeys and other food was donated by various businesses and individuals.

On Thanksgiving Day, the Community Café at People’s Place will also host a Thanksgiving brunch from 10 am to 12:30 pm. The brunch will feature a variety of brunch-type food.

The mission of People’s Place is to feed, clothe and respond to the essential needs of the people in Ulster County with kindness, compassion, and the preservation of human dignity, the agency has said.
