Victoria Mary Clarke, the wife of The Pogues singer Shane MacGowan, has provided a positive health update and revealed the musician is feeling “much better”.
On November 11th, Clarke shared an image of her sharing a kiss with MacGowan at his hospital bed and admitted to “facing terrifying fears of loss that can feel so big and devastating”. The couple have been in a relationship for many decades and were married in 2018.
Clarke described their love as “the most beautiful and powerful thing”. However, she also discussed her fears about MacGowan’s health, noting how she “can’t imagine life without this person that you love”.
She concluded: “Choose to stay present with everything that unfolds and to feel as much as possible in every moment and we can be surprised that there are more moments of beauty and grace and even joy than we ever imagined. Stay tuned in to love, no matter what is happening in your world and keep inviting all of your angels and guides to support you and know that love is always the best choice!”
MacGowan has been in intensive care for many months due to encephalitis, which causes problems to the brain. According to the NHS, the condition is life-threatening and requires urgent hospital help, which could last several months.
Clarke has now shared a further update on MacGowan’s condition on November 17th on Twitter alongside an image of The Pogues frontman smiling in his hospital bed. She captioned the uplifting post: “Shane is feeling much better today! I am so grateful to everyone who is willing him to get home for the Christmas!”
MacGowan has spent a sizeable portion of 2023 in hospital, but Clarke is optimistic he will be released in time to celebrate Christmas at home. The musician was first admitted to intensive care in June before his recent readmission.
The Pogues leader has suffered a myriad of health problems since fracturing his pelvis in 2015 and was hospitalised once more in 2022. However, in recent months, he has been visited by several close friends and famous musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, who Clarke has thanked for their support.
